Cryptoid: Gippsland Lion

Gippsland Lion - Lion photo original - Photographer- Buffa, Title- Lion https---flic.kr-p-2nQHGo - Picture of trees is haunted hills tours taken in the haunted hills

Gippsland Lion. The photo of the lion is by photographer – Buffa, titled: Lion found https:flic.kr/p/2nQHGo (The trees behind taken by Haunted Hills Tours in the Haunted Hills.

The elusive Gippsland Lion, was it a cryptoid never captured or fictional creation to explain sheep mutilations?

There are no pictures of the Gippsland Lion, there are pictures of creatures believed to be, up until capture that weren’t lions. Some weren’t even of feline origin. Like the poor huge ranga wombat that was killed and caught in place of the Gippsland Lion.

The Gippsland Lion is very strong it tears through sheep like they’re sheets, it’s a very large cat, it chats and it’s fawn coloured. Legend says that it was able to drag a dog down by it’s shoulder.

Some calculated of nine feet long, three feet high, with a wobbly head. With a paw four inches across, 4 toes in front one at the side similar to a dog, with a long bushy tail. In Traralgon one morning a man found tracks he believed was the Gippsland Lion, they called it a Gunyah (hut) cat. Alerting his neighbours they thought they’d found one. Following some paw prints they believed were made by the Gippsland Lion, who’d appeared been sniffing their letter boxes. They caught up with the creator of the paw prints and came face to face with the Mailman who’d lost his shoes.

During the 1920’s the sheep were being killed, and this was affecting the local economy so the shop owners and farmers paid for a lion slayer who hailed from Hurtsbridge to come to the Latrobe Valley to hunt and kill the Gippsland Lion.

The fact is the sheep were being killed, the creature doing this was never found. Maybe it was a Yowie?

People have seen the Gippsland Lion but never at opportune times convenient to kill it, like the family who nearly ran it over in their buggy on Morwell River Road. The Gippsland Lion jumped out into the path of their buggy and out of the way just as quickly.

Have you seen the Gippsland Lion? Reports waned after the second world war. .. and were replaced with the Black Panther.

Green Man

This is not about little green men, from out of space. The Green Man is a forest spirit with depictions and stories dating back to the 11th Century, some archeologists even say in Celtic circles this belief predates Christianity.

The Green Man is depicted with a masculine face of varying ages ranging from middle age to an elderly man, the common denominator is the face is made up of foliage. There are even pictures of skulls with foliage  wrapping around the bones or moving towards the skull. These pictures embody the ideas of rebirth, reliance and ruin that the Green Man holds.

In the early days winter was harsh anyone who has seen Game of Thrones has an idea how formidable an opponent the winter was to humanity in the early stages. The deity that brought the vegetation, was reviled for bringing life, and was considered the bringer of life in the natural world. Also the power to take and that required a level of reliance or respect, in order to experience the rebirth of Spring again.

It is believed that the Green Man was the idea behind Jack in the Green, Robin Hood, Peter Pan and Herne the Hunter during the Victorian period where the Green Man gained greater popularity.

When the different tribal and pagan beilefs came in contact with Christianity they blended the stories the locals already told and retold the stories about their spirits, and thus the church depicted the Green Man as a demon, adding horns to the depictions.  It appears that this version of the Green Man captured imaginations, and inspired the idea of a nature entity that protects orchards and the environment killing those who would seek to do it harm or bad people in general. In modern depctions it is the vines moving and strangling or sntaching ankles and hanging people upside-down dropping them to death.

The Green Man has also been found as far as the middle east, he wasn’t horned in these depictions and in fact directly translated was called a green prophet.

Today the Green Man is celebrated in festivals, has a link with May Day celebrations.

Have you seen the Green Man either in art or nature?

When ghosts attach

Ghost Hug - photo by Timothy Krause

Ghosts attach themselves to people for a whole host of reasons. Sometimes a whole host of ghosts attach themselves to a person, this is usually a highly sensitive person who is most likely to be open to the spiritual and psychic ability.

In most cases ghosts attach to:

– People they know (not willing to let go, unresolved issues, to provide information or to watch over)

-People they want to know (for some reason they are intrigued, attracted, or dislike)

Some people may not notice that a ghost has attached themselves, they can live symbiotically for a long time never noticing more than an occasional presence or niggling memory.

A change in circumstances can shift the entity from a watchful presence into action for good or bad, depending on their temperament. I’ve had a few stories of people who’ve lived in haunted houses had a ghost attachment that were fine, some were aware of the ghostly presence but not fearful, when something changes and the poltergeist behaviours commence.

One of the stories I heard went as far as strangling a partner – thankfully it didn’t complete the job. It was a scary experience for all involved others experience things moving in the house, objects being thrown, others power disruptions lights blowing. Sometimes changing your behaviour in the house, one of the stories I heard was a house where everything had to be shut, all the doors, cupboards and windows or else the ghost would torment and pull the covers off the bed until the things were shut. If shutting everything in your house cramps your style you might want to get someone in to help clear the house.

These are extreme cases and require intervention from a spiritual healer.

Although ghost attachments can also cause some mental disturbances, like nightmares, feeling harrrassed, affecting your emotions. Ghosts can even suck your energy to give themselves more energy and may be the cause of physical stress, tiredness. There also could be other factors at play, so be sure to get checked out by your doctor as well.

Unfortunately with ghost attachment there is no ability to scientifically evaluate it. Which is why you should consider all the options first – unless of course you’re experience poltergeist behaviour and things. Also remember any prolonged period of stress can play havoc with our bodies so it’s a good to have a checkup with your doctor.

By the way the picture I used – before you use it as evidence, I have to confess, I couldn’t find any creative commons free pictures that had a “ghost hug” in them. This is a reflection in a window of a shop, by Timothy Krause. The full picture is below.

Book Review: Great Gippsland Mysteries

Grant Robinson a local Gippsland resident wrote Great Gippsland Mysteries published in 2014.

This book came out of an experience Grant had when he was 11 (you’ll have to read the book to find out) that led him to a lifelong journey, that includes a Bachelor of Applied Mathematics and Diploma of Education and interest in the paranormal especially local experiences.

Gippsland’s Cryptoids:

The book opens looking at Cryptiods, or mysterious and rare creatures. Grant takes a chronological and evidence based approach to exploring these issues, he uses first person accounts. It shapes a fascinating tale, some of the stories you may have known. This section of the book covers ‘The Wonthaggi Monster’, ‘Yarram Elephant’, and ‘Gunyah Lion’ (which I call the Gippsland Lion). The second chapter is devoted to big cats and the sightings of those all over Gippsland.

Grant follows the recent sightings of these creatures, and as much information as there is about them.

Gippsland’s UFOs

Chapter three is massive and spans from 1909 to 2009 with sightings of UFO’s, stories of abductions, disappearances, missing time and pictures. He also covers a case of an Unidentified Sunken Object (USO) as well. The first hand accounts are fascinating and packaged well within the book.

Gippsland’s ghosts and hauntings

The book covers Gippsland’s ghost and haunting in part but one of the things I love about what Grant writes is later when he gives his summary explanation of these things. And says:

I believe I am one of the fortunate people to have literally touched the afterlife.

I love the way he has phrased that, and it gives an insight into the positive feelings he has about the paranormal.

The book also covers, mysterious deaths, lost treasure, ship wrecks and more!

Poltergeist and pushy ghosts

Poltergeists and pushy ghosts (1)

Firstly becareful: Whilst most poltergeists appear mischevious it’s best to get professional intervention as soon as possible, priest, church leader, medium,  spiritual healer.  Some people have successfully negotiated to live peacefully with poltergeists.

The term poltergeist is a German word literally meaning noisy ghost. Not all people who deal with poltergeists, ghosts, residual haunt, haunted, active haunt, messenger, spirit, orb, animal ghostpoltergeists consider it a ghost, as it rarely forms an apparition, and may not be a spirit of a loved one who’s passed. A poltergeist is rarely caught on film as though they’re using energy on

affecting the natural environment over being visible. There are shadows or distortions on some that look more authentic.

I’ve been told stories of things going thump while nothing is disturbed through to water running down walls, and other poltergeist symptoms in between. Commonly attributed poltergeist activity is on a still night windows rattle, doors slam or things open or move with no reason.

Levitation is attributed to poltergeists made famous through the “Einfield Poltergeist” , where two  police saw an arm chair levitate, the looked for wires, magnets and every other thing they could think of and couldn’t find a reason, however couldn’t proceed with an investigation as no laws were being broken. Many ghost hunters visited the house and the girls sometimes played pranks on them however they also were unable to explain the other symptoms. They saw things moving on their own, like the girls mother who was in the girls room the night the dresser moved across the room blocking the door. The mother ran to it, it rammed into at first and then she pushed it back in place.

Skeptics believed the children were playing pranks, however too many people had consistently inexplicable experiences in the house the house is considered truly haunted.

Here’s a playlist of poltergeist clips from YouTube:

Poltergeists seem to mostly be mischievous, but it is serious and you should seek some form of help. As one of the theories about poltergeists absorb energy, so use less energy, keep calm and seek help.  However lately a lot of footage is collecting with pushy ghosts. Literally on CCTV people are falling over and there is no or some distortion and they fall as though pushed.

There has been very few reported symptoms of hauntings in those areas although some are hotels and it may not be good business to accept the signs. Also it would be difficult to know if it is a ghost someone brought in or if it was one that always was there or a haunted object.

Do you have any theories why pushy ghosts are cropping up or are all these fakes and people really good at falling?

Verifying Ghost Pictures

photography, spiritual, ghost,

A beginners guide to verifying ghost photos.

Step one: Be skeptical. It’s hard but it’s for the best, and it helps build credibility.

Second step – look at the photos on the computer, try not to zoom in your phone as the screen is smaller and you may see something, that you won’t be able to stop seeing it, however, it may just be pixels and light. The phenomenon where we create meaning out of random stimulus is called pareidolia. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t such a thing as ghosts, they can be captured on film, but that’s not always the way they reveal themselves. Scents and sounds can’t be photographed although sounds may appear on a video.

The story behind the picture is a little important, however it is noted most full apparitions (that look like a person) aren’t experienced by the person taking the photograph or other subjects until later. It takes a lot of energy for the apparition to appear there is little else it can do, as we’ll explore when we look at the ‘pushy-ghost’ phenomenon or poltergeists they only appear as a blur on the footage, as though the energy is directed into affecting the natural world.

There are ways to check that photos haven’t been edited through programs such as http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH106828 and image edit software, that can breakdown the metadata of a photo.

Check shutter speed, and aperture. This is especially important as with a long exposure, and the subject not staying in the frame can cause them to appear opaque, it’s important to check the settings through the metadata (which is also available through image editing software).

Natural elements can cause ghost/spirit/orb phenomenon make sure you eliminate these reasons first:

– shiny or reflective surfaces (this is because this is kind of how lenses work, through mirrors and reflective surfaces)

– dusty

– moisture

– Hair wafting into the lense

– Smoke from off the camera

A little knowledge of some photographic principles:

Lens Flare is caused by light from outside the photo bouncing around the internal mechanism (including lenses) captured by the film or digital sensor.

Light from an outside light source, the angle and pinpointing light sources can help determine if it’s a lens flare, along with the angle.

Examples of lens flare:

spirit pic

This was captured at Moe Cemetery on the 4.03.15 by Kevin Bechaz from http://cinematicrandomness.blogspot.com.au/ – This if it is a spirit would be a great example of a capture. Other wise, it’s a beam of sunshine… or… lens flair?

The lens flare dot (Source: http://cdn.digital-photo-secrets.com/images/flickr/4795329839_aa86226748.jpg)

Artistic lens flare, creating the effect of a halo. (source: http://cdn.digital-photo-secrets.com/images/flickr/5906331494_30b1aeac01.jpg)

Blurry photos are a result of low light, either increase the shutter speed or add flash or external light source. Be careful if you have a blurry photo saying there is something supernatural in it as it can be easily dismissed. This can also result from the photographer shaking. A lot of ghost photos are in clear photos with the only distortion as the apparition.

Low resolution results in pixelation or noise which looks like static over the picture.
